Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are a family of organic compounds with the formula C6H5CnH2n+1. Typically, n lies between 10 and 16, although generally supplied as a tighter cut, such as C12-C15, C12-C13 and C10-C13, for detergent use. They are mainly produced as intermediate in the production of surfactants, for use in detergent. Linear alkylbenzene is sulfonated to produce linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), a biodegradable surfactant. LAS replaced branched dodecylbenzene sulfonates, which were phased out because they biodegrade more slowly. Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid is then neutralized with caustic Soda to form its Sodium salt LAS-Na. This surfactant is used in the manufacture of synthetic detergents in liquid, cake or powder form. Very small amounts of LAB are also known to have uses in ink manufacture.which is used in laundry detergents, light-duty dishwashing liquids, industrial cleaners, and household cleaners applications.LAS is also used as an emulsifier (e.g., for agricultural herbicides and in emulsion polymerization) and as a wetting agent.
