Propylene oxide is an acutely toxic and carcinogenic organic compound . This colourless volatile liquid with an odour similar to ether, is produced on a large scale industrially.  It is also used as a pesticide and a fumigant for the sterilization of packaged foods and plastic medical instruments. Acute inhalation exposure to vapors of this compound can result in respiratory tract irritation, coughing, difficulty in breathing (dyspnea) and buildup of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) that can possibly lead to pneumonia.Used mainly as a chemical intermediate, it has been used as a food fumigant (dried fruit and bulk).Used to prepare slides for electron microscopy and to disinfect the skin. Propylene oxide is used primarily as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyethers and propylene glycol. Its major application is its use for the production of polyether polyols for use in making polyurethane plastics. It is a chiral epoxide, although it is commonly used as a racemic mixture.
